Big Guns of the Green
Hearts
Bf 109G-6 fighters of III./JG 54, the famous Green Hearts, maneuver for
attack position during a chance encounter with a flight of P-38 fighters
near Bremen Germany in the Spring of 1944. Armed with extra fire power
provided by the addition of under-wing MG 151, 20mm cannons, these Messerschmitts
operated primarily in the anti-bomber mission where their "big guns"
were necessary to bring down the heavy four-engine U.S. bombers..
